I have been spending a lot of time thinking about what motivates me ever since Andy Stanley dropped his disturbing question this Sunday. Go watch the video if you are curious. It’s worth your time.
What breaks your heart?
The question is brilliant because it gets you thinking about what motivates each of us. Even better, everyone’s answer is radically different.
What breaks my heart is seeing incredible people who are not living out their full potential because they don’t realize they are capable. In fact, this is the exact reason I started my company. I am more excited about creating a culture in my company that fosters people taking responsibility for themselves and for their dreams than I am about the services we provide. I believe that what most people need is a person to believe in them and an environment where they free to go after their dreams.
I have had plenty of people in my life who saw more in me than I saw in myself. These people played powerful roles in me becoming who I am. And…they still heavily influence the person I want to become.
One more thought from Andy’s Sermon…
He said, “If you really want to become a better person, do something that makes the world a better place.”
If you really want to become a better person, do something that makes the world a better place.
The whole point of life and of everything we do is to leave things better than we found it. This is why checking off a long to do list feels so good. It’s why we feel better after volunteering our time. Moving the ball forward feels good because we where designed to make things better.
This is even truer when it comes to helping people improve their circumstances and their lives.
Go figure out what breaks your heart and do something about it because you were created to make things better.
