What’s the worst job you have ever had, and what did you do about it?
I love asking this question in interviews. The answer shows me how someone approaches life, and there are two common variations of responses.
My circumstances were awful (boss, environment, culture, coworker), so I left.
My circumstances were awful (boss, environment, culture, coworker), so I leveraged my skills and influence to make them better.
People either avoid difficulty and discomfort, or they decide to push through to leave a mark.
The latter group sees the possibility for a better future and takes action. This doesn’t mean they don’t look for healthier environments and better places to make a positive impact. However, it does mean they refuse to sit back and blame their circumstances.
